Suddenly, you hear an eerie rustling sound. You turn and scream at the bush in panic, “Who’s there?!” But there is no answer. You’re facing a Minecraft mob. Those creatures (often simply called monsters) come in numerous variations and designs. The sheer amount of Minecraft mobs makes it nearly impossible to include all of them. By now, Minecraft includes dozens of different mobs, from simple farm animals to strange dimension bosses. Depending on what variants you include, there are more than 90 different Minecraft mobs. You can encounter them in all shapes and in many biomes and at nearly any time of day. Whether or not a certain mob will spawn depends on several things:

biome

light level

dimension

difficulty

game version

Once you encounter a Minecraft mob, the game mode decides whether or not it will attack you. After all, even hostile mobs will deal less damage in easy mode. When playing in peaceful mode, they won’t even spawn (except for the ender dragon).

All Minecraft Mobs: Threats to Players

You can sort the many existing Minecraft mobs by several criteria. There are a number of groups like:

flying minecraft mobs

pillagers

Nether mobs

aquatic mobs

arthropods

breedable or unbreedable

undead mobs

animals

rideables

bosses

summoned

Those are just some examples. Still, they show one thing: Those categories can overlap, making clear categorization very difficult. And though they vary so much, they have one thing in common – most Minecraft mobs drop items and XP orbs upon death, making encounters worth it.

Since all Minecraft mobs have a certain threat level, they are sorted only by that property in the following table. This threat level determines how they behave when they encounter players. From cuddly sheep to destructive zombies, the game offers a full range from harmless to terrifying Minecraft creatures. Those categories can be complicated but according to official Minecraft sites only the ender dragon and the wither are Minecraft mob bosses.

Fun Fact:Since the warden came with the 1.19 ‘Wild’ update, players sometimes consider him a Minecraft mob boss as well. Even before that update, players sometimes thought of the elder guardian as a boss. With the ‘Pale Garden’ update, the creaking joined these two as a third ‘mini-boss’ for many players.

The Benefits of different Minecraft Mobs

Although the lists above are long and might look a bit intimidating, not every Minecraft mob is out to get you. Many of them are basically walking resources, some become loyal companions and others turn into the backbone of powerful XP farms. If you look beyond the first impression, mobs are one of the most useful ‘tools’ in the game.

Food & Farming

The most obvious benefit of many passive mobs is simple: food. Animals such as chickens, pigs, cows, rabbits and sheep can all be bred and turned into a renewable source of meat. At the same time, they provide plenty of byproducts like wool, leather, feathers, milk or eggs, making a small animal farm one of the strongest early-game upgrades for any base.

Aquatic and semi-aquatic mobs also fit into this ‘farmable’ category. Fish, glow squid and other sea creatures provide food and drops, while frogs and turtle farms create more niche items like froglights or scutes that you can use for decoration or brewing.

Companions & Utility Mobs

Not every useful mob ends up on your dinner plate. Some are best kept as companions. Many mobs can be tamed or trusted and then follow you, protect you or help you travel faster across the world:

wolves – help in combat

cats – keep creepers and phantoms at a distance, bring you small ‘gifts’

horses & Co. – all about movement

On top of that, there are constructed or utility mobs. Iron golems and snow golems can be built by the player and then defend villages or your own base against hostile mobs. So, while this article includes current game versions up to 1.21.11, information might change quickly with coming updates. What Are Minecraft Mobs? Minecraft mobs are entities in the game that are considered either alive or undead. ‘Mob’ is short for ‘mobile’ and thus simply means that the creatures of the block world can move around. By now, Minecraft includes dozens of different mobs, from simple farm animals to strange dimension bosses. Depending on what variants you include, there are more than 90 different Minecraft mobs. You can encounter them in all shapes and in many biomes and at nearly any time of day. Whether or not a certain mob will spawn depends on several things: biome light level dimension difficulty game version Once you encounter a Minecraft mob, the game mode decides whether or not it will attack you. After all, even hostile mobs will deal less damage in easy mode. When playing in peaceful mode, they won’t even spawn (except for the ender dragon). All Minecraft Mobs: Threats to Players You can sort the many existing Minecraft mobs by several criteria. There are a number of groups like: flying minecraft mobs pillagers Nether mobs aquatic mobs arthropods breedable or unbreedable undead mobs animals rideables bosses summoned Those are just some examples. A short overview might look like this: Passive Minecraft mobs Neutral Minecraft mobs Hostile Minecraft mobs least dangerous never attack on their own attack players never attack defend themselves when attacked or too close may hold weapons, e.g. swords offer advantages (trading, food, materials) Passive Minecraft Mobs Those are Minecraft mobs you want to meet when playing peacefully and not being eager to fight to survive. They include mostly animals. Yet even in the category of passive Minecraft mobs you could still sort them even more: on land / underground in water others armadillo axolotl allay bat cod snow golem camel pufferfish strider cat salmon *villager *chicken *squid *cow tadpole *fox tropical fish frog *horse ocelot parrot pig rabbit sheep sniffer turtle *other versions of the mob exist Neutral Minecraft Mobs It’s better to leave neutral Minecraft mobs alone and not disturb them. As long as you are nice to them, they are nice to you. That’s rule number one! Still, some of them also attack when you get too close to them, so just keep your distance, or you might face those Minecraft mobs: on land / underground in water others bee dolphin enderman goat iron golem *llama *piglin panda polar bear *spider wolf *other versions of the mob exist Hostile Minecraft Mobs Prepare your armor and keep your swords, shields, bows or whatever weapon you prefer ready! Hostile Minecraft mobs outnumber passive mobs. This means, there are a lot of them! Hostile mobs are often the most bizarre and dangerous creatures in the game, deserving the term ‘monster’: on land / underground in water others blaze *guardian phantom breeze vex creaking *creeper endermite evoker *ghast *hoglin pillager ravager shulker silverfish *skeleton *slime vindicator warden witch zombie *other versions of the mob exist Minecraft Mob Families Some Minecraft mobs don’t just exist as a single creature but as whole families of variants we marked in the tables above for keeping them understandable. Here are the respective Minecraft mob families with their different mob variants: Chicken: chicken jockey Cow: mooshroom (brown & red) Creeper: charged creeper Fox: snow fox Ghast: happy ghast Guardian: elder guardian (ocean monuments) Hoglin: zoglin (outside the Nether) Horse: donkeys mules skeleton horse Llama: trader llama Piglin: baby piglins piglin brute Skeleton: stray (snowy biomes) wither skeleton (Nether fortresses) bogged (swamps) spider jockeys skeleton horseman Slime: magma cube (Nether) Spider: cave spiders spider jockey Squid: glow squid Villager: wandering trader Minecraft: Zombified Mobs Certain Minecraft mobs have special ‘undead’ versions or can be turned into them under specific conditions: villager → zombie villager piglin → zombified piglin hoglin → zoglin zombie → drowned zombie variants by biome (desert → husks for zombies; cold biomes → strays for skeletons) These variants keep the basic idea of the original Minecraft mob, but are more dangerous, resistant in certain biomes or have special attacks (like drowned with tridents). Minecraft Mob Bosses – Final Enemies? Among the mobs, there are also true legends that will bring you to your knees in awe when you see them. They’ll truly present very special challenges for you. These include: the ender dragon the wither The fight against them is hard, takes a long time, and victory is excellently rewarded. Those categories can be complicated but according to official Minecraft sites only the ender dragon and the wither are Minecraft mob bosses. The Benefits of different Minecraft Mobs Although the lists above are long and might look a bit intimidating, not every Minecraft mob is out to get you. Many of them are basically walking resources, some become loyal companions and others turn into the backbone of powerful XP farms. If you look beyond the first impression, mobs are one of the most useful ‘tools’ in the game. Food & Farming The most obvious benefit of many passive mobs is simple: food. Companions & Utility Mobs Not every useful mob ends up on your dinner plate. Some are best kept as companions. Many mobs can be tamed or trusted and then follow you, protect you or help you travel faster across the world: wolves – help in combat cats – keep creepers and phantoms at a distance, bring you small ‘gifts’ horses & Co. – all about movement On top of that, there are constructed or utility mobs. Iron golems and snow golems can be built by the player and then defend villages or your own base against hostile mobs. Allays, villagers and wandering traders add even more depth: they trade, collect items for you or make your world feel alive and populated, even on a multiplayer server. XP Farming & Loot Finally, mobs are the main source of experience points (XP) in Minecraft. Almost every hostile mob drops XP orbs when you defeat it, and those orbs are what you need for repairing gear, enchanting tools and applying powerful upgrades. Basic enemies like zombies, skeletons and creepers are easy targets for simple XP farms, while nether mobs such as blazes and underwater enemies like guardians are popular choices for more advanced XP setups because they drop more XP than many other mobs. On top of XP, mobs also carry rare loot that you can’t get anywhere else. Drowned may drop tridents, phantoms drop phantom membranes and evokers are the only source of the totem of undying, which can literally save you from death once. Boss mobs like the ender dragon and the wither take this to the extreme by dropping huge amounts of XP on top of unique items such as the dragon egg or the nether star. If you combine all of these benefits, mobs are not just ‘moving threats’ but a central part of your long-term progression: they feed you, protect you, carry you around and power your enchanting setup. Minecraft Mobs & Minecraft Mods As with many other game systems, Minecraft mobs can be heavily modified with the help of mods. Community-made modpacks and single mods can change almost any aspect of a creature: where it spawns, how strong it is and even what it looks like. Some of the things you can adjust include: how many mobs spawn in a given area how mobs behave and react to players how much damage they deal or how tough they are their appearance, animations and sound effects In practice, this means you’ll find countless creative mob mods out there.
