Windrose: Island Exploration Guide
Table of Contents
Island Types
Windrose features a procedurally generated world with several distinct island biomes, each offering unique resources and challenges.
Coastal Islands
Small to medium islands with sandy beaches, shallow coves, and Pinewood forests. These are the safest islands for new crews — low-tier enemies, basic resources, and good fishing spots. Ideal as a starting base.
Jungle Islands
Dense, layered islands with Ironwood trees, exotic fruits, and dangerous predatory wildlife. Jungle islands contain the best wood resources in the game and often hide ruins with map fragments and crafting schematics.
Volcanic Islands
Hostile environments with rivers of lava, high-tier mineral deposits, and aggressive volcanic creatures. The risk is high, but volcanic islands contain Iron Ore veins, Sulfur, and occasionally Lava Crystals used in endgame recipes.
Abandoned Settlement Islands
Rare islands with the ruins of old civilizations. These islands contain Artifact Chests with unique blueprints, Ancient Coins (the premium currency for trader NPCs), and lore items that explain the world’s backstory.
Exploration Tips
- Map the Coastline First – Sail around the island before landing to spot beaches, coves, and potential danger zones
- Send a Scout – One crew member goes ashore first while others stay on the ship for quick extraction
- Mark Resource Nodes – Use the in-game map marker system to mark Ironwood trees, ore veins, and special locations for return trips
- Check the Tide – Some coves and caves are only accessible at low tide. Windrose has a dynamic day/night and tide cycle
- Bring Food – Island exploration can be time-consuming. Crew members with low food will suffer stamina penalties
Dungeons & Hidden Areas
Many islands in Windrose contain hidden underground areas and dungeons:
Cave Systems
Found on most medium-to-large islands, caves contain valuable ore deposits, rare mushrooms, and occasionally NPC enemies. Bring torches or a lantern — caves are completely dark without a light source.
Ancient Ruins
Found on Jungle and Abandoned Settlement islands. Ruins contain multiple rooms with puzzle locks and enemy guardians. Successfully clearing a ruins complex rewards the crew with an Artifact Chest containing a unique blueprint, map fragment, or rare material cache.
Underwater Wrecks
Accessible via diving near marked locations (treasure map fragments show underwater wreck sites). Wrecks contain Sea Brass, rare cannon components, and naval charts. Time-limited — divers must surface to breathe.
Claiming Islands
On a GPORTAL Windrose server, your crew can claim an island to prevent other players from building there (in PvP mode) and to enable persistent resource extraction.
To claim an island: place a Claim Stone at the highest point of the island and interact with it to register your crew’s ownership. The island will appear on the world map as owned by your crew.
Claimed island benefits include: protected building zones, persistent storage, and claim-only resource regeneration bonuses.
FAQ
How many islands can a crew claim?
The number of claimable islands per crew is set by the server admin. On default GPORTAL Windrose servers, crews can claim up to 3 islands. Admins can change this in the ServerDescription.json settings.
Do islands reset between server restarts?
No. Island claims, buildings, and resource states are saved automatically. As long as your GPORTAL server has auto-save enabled, your island base will persist across restarts.
Can I find treasure maps in Windrose?
Yes! Treasure maps are found in ruins chests and underwater wrecks. They reveal the location of buried treasure on other islands, marked by a distinctive glowing X when you’re on the right island.
