Hytale starts, you spawn, and there's this very specific feeling: it's familiar and new at the same time. No endless tutorial, no voice trying to guide you. You're just there, taking a deep breath, opening the gates, and starting your Hytale adventure.

The start in Hytale is more than just a spawn point

After you've probably spent quite a while working your way through the character editor with its seemingly endless possibilities, the world of Hytale appears surprisingly manageable at first: a few trees, some grass, a few animals. This will certainly feel familiar to you if you've already played other games with a “blocky” look. The peaceful environment, somewhere between forest, meadow, and water, gives you all the freedom that makes Hytale so special. Make your own decisions from the start and find your own way.

Once you leave your safe haven and open the gates to the planet Orbis, the adventure begins. Explore the area and be sure to collect all the wood, stone, and grass you encounter along the way. Every now and then, you'll come across small buildings. These aren't finished, enclosed buildings, but they are important landmarks. If you don't want to use the building from the first spawn as your first safe place, you can simply use one of the many others – or you can get started right away and stack blocks until your first base is ready.

The first moments: collecting, trying and understanding

You've successfully landed in the Hytale world of Orbis and collected your first materials – now what? First, try out how high you can jump. Two blocks are no problem, and from the third block onwards, your character will even pull itself up. This is not only ingenious, it also makes things a lot easier and opens up whole new perspectives.

Fill your pockets with seemingly unimportant resources, open your inventory, and realize that these materials from the ground are not so unimportant after all. With Hytale Pocket Crafting, you can craft your first tools and weapons. A simple axe to cut down trees faster, a normal pickaxe to collect stones and blocks much more easily, and your first weapon. This is a very special moment, because you'll quickly realize that you won't get very far in Hytale with your bare hands.

Which items you should craft first in Hytale

You've already read about the axe, pickaxe, and first weapon, but there are other important items you should craft at the beginning to make your life in Hytale easier:

  • Any tools made of wood or stone, not just axes and pickaxes – your life in Hytale will be simpler and you'll finally be done with bloody hands from constantly chopping down trees
  • Melee weapons: A sword to protect you in close combat, or even a spear
  • Ranged weapons: Here you can choose between bows and crossbows. The bow is particularly useful in the beginning, as it allows you to take out enemies from a safe distance with just a few arrows
  • Torches: Extremely important as soon as you set off on your first trip to the cave in Hytale. The caves in the game are not just dark, they are “I-can't-see-anything-ahhhh-dead-dark” dark

In order to create all this and much more, you will eventually need workshops. Workbenches, forges, and furnaces. The larger your infrastructure, the more complex things you can create and build.

Your first Hytale base

We all have experienced this, at least since Skyrim: At some point, your pockets are full. At that point, it's time to build your first base in Hytale. It doesn't have to be a huge fortress; a small wooden hut will do the trick. Make sure it's closed, you have light, and your workbench is nearby. Now you're at the point where pride takes over and the adventure can really begin. The workbench unlocks more recipes and you can start working towards your next goals or recipes.

Pssh: If you craft a hammer in Hytale, you can use it to change the appearance of blocks that have already been placed and give your base a personal touch.

Wood and stone are a thing of the past – ores and metals is the way to go

So, base built, bags full, berries and apples secured for supply, torches at the ready; then you're good to go to the first cave. You should have a large stack of torches in stock so you can illuminate the cave well. The Hytale caves are really no fun and extremely dark... and deep. No pain, no gain.

In addition, aggressive enemies await you there who are not happy to see visitors. Collect copper for the first time and once you have enough, you can return to base. Once there, you can craft new tools and weapons, with each new material opening up new possibilities. Put the ore in the furnace and add wood – and you're ready to smelt your first copper bars.

With upgrades from stronger materials, you'll feel stronger and safer, and Hytale will reward you again and again for being patient, exploring, and planning ahead.

Real threat: enemies of flesh and bone

Sooner or later, on your first trip to the cave or new areas, you'll encounter hostile creatures. You may recognize some of them from other building block games. But you have to be careful: the enemies are strong, especially in the beginning when you don't have any armor or a powerful weapon with you. You also have to keep an eye on your stamina, because when it's depleted, you can't run as fast, and sometimes that can make the difference between life and death.

You can encounter different Hytale enemies depending on the area and time of day. There are nasty crawling creatures that are quite fast and strong, skeletons that immediately rush at you and try to kill you as soon as they get aggro, and very large and extremely aggressive enemies that only appear in later zones. And as mentioned above: it's best to attack from a distance with a bow and arrow, charging the arrow for a long time to deal more damage. This applies to almost every other Hytale weapon, by the way. The longer you charge, the stronger the attack.

Hytale Multiplayer: Better together

At the beginning of Hytale, you naturally want to explore, look around, and get your bearings. But once you need to collect your first materials, build your first base, and the need for stronger tools and weapons grows, you'll realize that it would be easier with a few friends. Not to mention the fun factor.

When you play together with others in a group on your Hytale server, the game takes on a whole new dynamic. You can divide up tasks: one person collects materials, another builds tools, another works on the base, and the next goes exploring. Everyone does what they do best.
