Is there a limit on RAM for GPORTAL servers?
Every now and then, we get asked whether the amount of RAM on GPORTAL servers is limited.
Generally speaking, there are no limits on any of our slot-based servers. The servers simply use as much RAM as they need to deliver good performance. The amount of RAM used cannot be changed by the server owner.
The situation is different for our RAM-based games, Minecraft, Hytale, and Project Zomboid. For these games, you can specifically allocate a certain amount of RAM, which the server will then use.
Here are a few points to note:
- If you’re experiencing performance issues with RAM-based servers, adding more RAM is often NOT the solution. So before you order more RAM, and end up paying more money, it’s best to contact our support team first so they can take a look at it.
- The display of the amount of RAM currently in use in our web interface may, under certain circumstances, show a RAM usage level that seems confusing to you. This happens most often with Minecraft, which runs on Java. This is because Java typically allocates all available RAM, even if it isn’t actually needed. As a result, the display may indicate that you’ve reached your RAM limit. In reality, however, this doesn’t necessarily mean that your server is actually using all of the RAM. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this, please feel free to contact our support team, and we’ll be happy to clarify the situation for you.
