Palworld Mutations explained: How to breed mutated Pals
Palworld 1.0 has introduced mutations that make your Pals even stronger. In the GPORTAL Blog, we’ll explain how to get a mutated Pal, what benefits it offers, and how you can increase your chances of a mutation.
What are mutations in Palworld 1.0?
Mutations are a new game mechanic introduced in the Palworld 1.0 update. When breeding, there’s a small chance that a mutated egg will be produced, from which a mutated Pal will then hatch. These Pals differ from a “normal” breeding result in two ways:
- higher stats
- a unique passive ability
So a mutation not only makes your Pal rarer, but can also offer you real advantages thanks to its better stats and a special passive skill.
How to get a mutated Pal
As described above, Palworld mutations occur through breeding. You don’t need special Pals as parents, nor do you have to combine specific species. The process is as follows:
- assign two compatible Pals to a Breeding Farm
- provide cake
- wait for the resulting egg
- hatch the egg
The mutation is completely random. Unfortunately, even perfect parents don’t guarantee you a mutated Pal. You can tell right away if it worked by looking at the resulting egg, which looks different from other Palworld eggs.
What’s the chance of mutation?
Pocketpair itself doesn’t provide any specific details on the mutation rate. It’s currently purely a matter of luck, and the probability is low. If you want to improve your chances of a mutation, check out our tips below. However, there’s never a guarantee.
So, in the end, a bit of luck is still part of the equation. You might get a mutation after just a few attempts, or you might produce so many eggs that your breeding takes over your entire camp. RNG is just RNG.
The new cakes help with Palworld breeding
Version 1.0 introduced several new cakes. Each one serves a different purpose.
Mushroom Cake
The Mushroom Cake slightly increases the probability that a bred Pal will have better stats.
Vegetable Cake
With the Vegetable Cake, breeding produces two eggs instead of just one. While it doesn’t directly increase the mutation chance of a single egg, it does result in more offspring—and thus more attempts—which in turn boosts your overall chances.
Extravagant Vegetable Cake
If you’re specifically looking to collect Palworld mutations, this cake is particularly important. The Extravagant Vegetable Cake:
- increases the probability of a mutation
- also improves the chance of better stats
Special Cake
With the Special Cake, you can increase the probability that multiple passive abilities from the parents will be inherited. So if you already have potential parents in mind that possess good abilities, this cake is especially useful.
What mutation passives are there?
Mutated Pals can gain special passive abilities, which make the mutation system in Palworld very interesting.
Babysitter
This ability increases the speed of egg production and hatching by 30% each when the respective Pal is assigned to the breeding farm. So it’s perfect for additional breeding rounds—getting a mutation to collect more mutations, a cycle that can be addictive.
Heavily Armored
If your mutated Pal has this passive ability, it is immune to explosion damage. A very special skill that can become quite interesting depending on the opponent.
Idiosyncratic
This mutation offers several defensive benefits at once:
- +50% automatic health regeneration for the Pal and the player
- +25% defense
- Immunity to poison
- Immunity to burning
This makes Idiosyncratic particularly well-suited for defensive builds and longer battles.
Immortality
This mutation combines offense and healing. It provides +5% life steal, +100% automatic health regeneration from the Pal, and +15% attack. For Pals that are already strong in combat, this is one of the most exciting mutations.
Skymarcher
Does your mount need an upgrade? With Skymarcher, your Pal can make two additional jumps while riding. It’s not particularly important for a Pal in production, but it can be handy for your mount.
Which mutation is the best?
The answer depends on what you want to use your Pal for. For combat Pals, Immortality and Idiosyncratic are particularly appealing. If you play more defensively, Idiosyncratic is still a good choice, but Heavily Armored is especially important against enemies with explosive attacks. On the other hand, if you want to build an efficient breeding program, Babysitter is a strong option.
As you can see, there’s no single “best” Palworld mutation. And if you're not sure yet which Pal is the best choice for your current run, you can check out our Palworld Tier List 1.0 for an overview of which Pals are best for combat, bases, and mounts.
Can passive skills from mutated Pals be inherited?
In short: Yes. The unique passive skills of a mutated Pal can be passed down to its offspring through further breeding.
So you don’t necessarily have to hope that your perfect Pal with the desired mutation appears right away. If you get a desired passive skill on another mutated Pal, you can try to incorporate it into your desired line through breeding over subsequent generations.
This allows you to strategically combine powerful passive skills and, step by step, breed a Pal that fits your planned combat or base build as well as possible. Combined with the Special Cake, you can continue to optimize your breeding until, hopefully, you end up with exactly the Pal you wanted.
Mutation and Awakening are not the same thing
Although both systems were introduced simultaneously with Palworld 1.0, they function completely differently. While Mutation occurs randomly during breeding and generates better stats and passive skills, Awakening is a separate endgame system. This requires so-called Radiant Gems, which you can obtain in the World Tree and use to help Pals become stronger. Want to max out your Pals? Then you can also combine both systems.
Before you dive headfirst into optimizing your endgame Pals, though, you’ll obviously need to reach that level first. Check out our blog to learn how to get to Level 80 in Palworld as efficiently and quickly as possible.
How to efficiently farm Palworld mutations
If you’re specifically looking for mutated Pals, don’t just throw any pairing into the breeding farm and hope for the best. The following tips are valuable:
- multiple breeding farms running simultaneously
- enough ingredients for cakes
- good Pal parents with the desired stats and passive skills
- stock up on Extravagant Vegetable Cakes for a higher chance of mutation
- Pals with the Babysitter ability to speed up further breeding processes
- Special Cakes for passing on desired passive abilities later
Despite all this effort, a mutation ultimately comes down to pure chance. These tips simply help ensure you get as many good attempts as possible and increase your chances.
Is mutation farming worth it in Palworld 1.0?
For a normal playstyle, you don’t need to start producing hundreds of eggs right now—otherwise, the actual point and fun of the game will eventually be lost. Mutated Pals become particularly interesting in the endgame and for min-maxing, when you really want to get the most out of your Pals.
If you’re determined to have particularly strong combat Pals, obtain specific passive abilities, or simply get the most out of your team, then mutations provide you with an even more extensive system to work with.
But: Just have fun with the game—you don’t necessarily have to sit there with an Excel spreadsheet, meticulously checking and planning everything. Play Palworld however you enjoy it most!
FAQ
How do I get a mutated Pal?
Mutations occur completely at random during breeding. A mutated egg hatches into a Pal with higher stats and a special passive ability.
Can a cake increase the chance of mutation?
The Extravagant Vegetable Cake increases the probability of a mutation and also improves the chance of getting better stats.
Can I pass on passive abilities from mutations?
Yes, mutation-based passive abilities can be passed down to offspring in future breeding attempts.
What’s the best mutation?
There’s no such thing as the perfect mutation. But for combat Pals, Immortality and Idiosyncratic are particularly interesting. Babysitter is ideal for breeding farms, and Skymarcher provides additional mobility for mounts.
The next egg could be the one
The new Palworld 1.0 mutation system adds even more depth to the game. With the right cakes, good parents, and plenty of patience, you can introduce special passive abilities into your breeding lines and thus optimize your team to the max.
