Hytale Leather

Hytale leather never just drops into your inventory. Every piece of armor that protects you through a dungeon, every weapon upgrade that opens up the next combat tier: all of it traces back to a hide, a tanning rack, and a few minutes of waiting. There are four leather grades in the game right now: light, medium, heavy, and the late-game storm leather. Each comes from a distinct pool of animals, scales with the zone you’re hunting in, and gates a specific band of crafting recipes at the workbench.

What Is Hytale Leather?

Unlike most survival games where a cow drops leather directly, Hytale splits the process in two:

  1. Animals drop hides when killed
  2. Turn Hytale hides into leather on a tanning rack

Hytale Hides are raw, unprocessed skins that are useless on their own. Also, only adult animals drop hides. Baby variants are always empty-handed, so don’t waste time on them.
This two-step system means Hytale leather is always a crafted intermediate material, never a lucky pickup. It also means you need to plan: you can’t tan hides faster than your rack can process them, and the rack only works while you stay within loading range. Build multiple racks early, and the bottleneck almost disappears.

All Hytale Leather Types at a Glance

Currently, 4 leather grades exist in the game. Three are farmable in survival mode today; with Hytale storm leather being tied to a future content drop. The table below shows each tier, where the hide comes from, and which gear tier it unlocks.

Leather tierSource hideMain animal sourcesUnlocks this gear tier
lightlight hidepigs, boars, deer, cows, chickens, rats, antelopes, horned rabbitsiron (tier 1)
mediummedium hidewolves, sabretooth cats, hyenas, fen stalkers, lava frogsthorium (tier 2)
heavyheavy hidebears, mosshorns, yetiscobalt & adamantite (tier 2-3)
stormstorm hidenot yet available in survival modemithril (tier 3 / creative only)

The progression is deliberately zone-gated: light hide is everywhere in Zone 1, medium hide appears as you move into predator-heavy territory, and heavy hide demands you engage the largest creatures Orbis throws at you. Each tier of armor follows the same ladder.

Hytale Light Leather & Light Hide

Hytale light leather is your entry point into the crafting system and the first hide type you’ll encounter in Zone 1. The animals that drop light Hide are passive or low-threat, meaning you can farm a comfortable stockpile before you’ve built any meaningful combat gear. This is intentional: Hytale light hide is how the game eases you into the tanning workflow before the enemies start fighting back.

What Drops Light Hide in Hytale?

Several animals drop light hide:

  • pigs & boars
  • deer
  • cows
  • chickens
  • rats
  • antelopes
  • horned rabbits (adults only)

Foxes are a common early-game animal but they do not drop light hide, only raw meat. Stick to the list above when farming. Animals in the emerald grove spawn in the open, respawn quickly, and are rarely dangerous in small numbers, making this the best early farming ground in Hytale. Because tamed livestock respawn on your farm, update 3’s animal taming feature makes Hytale light hide one of the few materials you can eventually produce without leaving your base.

How to Get Light Leather in Hytale

Collect light hide from the animals above, then place it in a tanning rack. Processing takes about 30 seconds. One Light Hide produces one Light Leather and there is no yield bonus.

1x light hide → (tanning rack, ~30 sec) → 1x light leather

Once you have your rack running, light leather becomes the least-scarce material in your early game, and it stays relevant as a secondary ingredient all the way through iron-tier armor and weapons.

Hytale Medium Leather & Medium Hide

Hytale medium leather is the first leather tier that requires you to take a hit or two to earn. The mobs that drop medium hide are predators: they come at you, not away from you. Before farming Hytale medium hide seriously, make sure you have at least iron-tier gear equipped and ideally a full iron set from the armorer’s workbench.

What Animals Drop Medium Hide in Hytale?

The list is shorter than the one for light hide and also more dangerous:

  • wolves
  • sabretooth cats
  • hyenas
  • fen stalkers (swamp/marsh biomes)
  • lava frogs

Of these, fen stalkers are the most efficient farm target for sheer volume. They’re common in swamp biomes, respawn frequently, and rarely appear in dangerous groups. Wolves are also abundant in Zone 1 forests if you’re not ready to travel to wetland areas yet. Lava frogs and sabretooth cats are zone-specific and better treated as opportunistic kills rather than dedicated farm targets until you’re comfortable in their home biome.

How to Get Medium Leather in Hytale

Processing works identically to light leather:

1x medium hide → (tanning rack, ~30 sec) → 1x medium leather

The bottleneck is almost always the hunting, not the tanning. Most players spend more time on Hytale medium leather than any other hide tier, because thorium is a very wide gear band and you’ll craft at this tier for a long stretch of mid-game before moving on to cobalt.

Hytale Heavy Leather & Heavy Hide

Hytale heavy leather is where the game stops holding back. Every animal that drops heavy hide is a serious fight, and some of them hit hard enough to end unprepared players in seconds. Thorium gear is the minimum recommendation before farming this tier. The payoff is access to cobalt and adamantite recipes: the two strongest armor sets obtainable in survival mode as of the current early access build.

What Animals Drop Heavy Hide in Hytale?

This is the shortest animal source list out of all Hytale leather types:

  • bears
  • mosshorns
  • yetis

Yetis are the standout choice for Hytale heavy hide farming. They spawn frequently in boreal mountain biomes, often drop 3-4x heavy hide per kill, and their spawn density makes efficient loop routes straightforward. Bears are solid alternatives in Zone 1 forest areas if you want to farm closer to home. Mosshorns are large horned creatures, sometimes mistaken for hay bales at distance. They are slower killers but less aggressive; good for players who need the hide without the pressure of a bear fight.

How to Get Heavy Leather in Hytale

Processing time is the same as the other tiers:

1x heavy hide → (tanning rack, ~30 sec) → 1x heavy leather

Because Hytale heavy hide drops are larger per kill than light or medium (especially from yetis), you’ll often return from a farm run with enough raw material to keep multiple racks busy. Consider upgrading your tanning rack to tier 2 before you start heavy hide farming in earnest. The ability to process multiple hide types simultaneously pays off quickly at this stage.

Hytale Storm Leather & Rare Leather Types

Hytale storm leather is the highest leather tier and a required ingredient for mithril-grade gear, the strongest equipment in Hytale. Unlike the three farmable tiers, storm leather has no viable source in survival / exploration mode as of the current early access build. No mob currently drops storm hide in the world, which means the tanning recipe exists but can’t be triggered through normal gameplay.

The only way to obtain storm leather right now is via creative mode or console commands: spawn Hytale storm hide using the item ID Ingredient_Hide_Storm, place it in a tanning rack, and wait 60 seconds for it to process. Developers have confirmed Hytale storm leather is planned for future high-tier content, likely tied to bosses or advanced biomes yet to be released.

Beyond storm leather, the game files also contain entries for:

  • dark leather
  • soft leather
  • scaled leather
  • prismatic leather

All are confirmed as ingredient-type items in the same leather family. None of these are farmable in survival mode yet. They are previews of the material depth Hytale is building toward as the zone content expands.

Hytale Storm Leather Crafting Uses

Basically, Hytale storm leather will play a crucial part in gearing up with mithril:

  • full mithril armor set: helmet, cuirass, gauntlets, greaves
  • mithril shield: 3x storm leather + 3x stormsilk scraps + 4x mithril ingots
  • mithril sword: 3x storm leather + 6x mithril ingots + 1x voidheart
  • backpack upgrade II: 16x storm leather + 8x adamantite ingots + 1x voidheart

The backpack upgrade II is arguably the most impactful use of Storm Leather in the game: it permanently expands inventory space, which benefits every playstyle. Once Hytale storm leather becomes available in survival mode, it will be one of the most contested resources in Hytale.

What Can You Craft With Hytale Leather?

Hytale leather appears in three crafting categories: armor, weapons, and utility items. The tier of leather you use maps directly to the material tier of the output; light for iron, medium for thorium, heavy for cobalt and adamantite.

Armor

All four armor slots (helm, cuirass, gauntlets, and greaves) require Hytale leather at every tier above copper. The full iron set is the first major gear upgrade in the game, and it’s entirely gated behind light leather and linen scraps.

Weapons & Tools

The blacksmith’s anvil uses leather as a binding material for most weapon types alongside metal ingots. A few confirmed and very useful recipes:

  • iron sword: 6x iron ingot + 3x Hytale light leather + 3x linen scraps
  • iron pickaxe, shovel, hatchet, hammer: each requires light leather at tier 1
  • shortbows & crossbows: require leather at the matching material tier
  • daggers: light or medium leather depending on the ingot tier

Utility Items

Several non-combat items also draw on Hytale leather:

  • crude bedroll:  earliest respawn anchor, light leather
  • repair kits: restore durability on gear
  • books: functional items used in decorating and potential future enchanting
  • backpack upgrade II: Hytale storm leather only; expands inventory permanently

FAQ

What drops light hide in Hytale?

Hytale light hide drops from small passive animals: pigs, boars, deer, cows, chickens, rats, antelopes, and horned rabbits. Adult versions only. Baby animals drop nothing.

What drops medium hide in Hytale?

Hytale medium hide drops from predatory animals: wolves, sabretooth cats, hyenas, fen stalkers, and lava frogs. These are hostile mobs, so bring decent gear before farming them.

What drops heavy hide in Hytale?

Hytale heavy hide comes from large, tanky creatures: bears, mosshorns, and yetis. Yetis in boreal mountain biomes drop 3-4x per kill and are the most efficient farm target.

How to make leather in Hytale?

Craft a tanning rack at your workbench using 6x tree trunk, 3x stone, and 3x Hytale light hide. Place hides in the rack’s input slot and wait ~30 seconds. Light hide becomes light leather, medium hide becomes medium leather, and so on.

How do I get Hytale storm leather?

Storm leather can’t be farmed in survival / exploration mode yet. No mob drops storm hide in the current early access build. You can obtain it via creative mode or console commands by spawning storm hide (Ingredient_Hide_Storm) and processing it at a tanning rack (60-second timer). It will become farmable in a future update.

Can I get Hytale leather without hunting animals?

In small amounts, yes. Chests in ruins and dungeons occasionally contain Hytale leather directly. Tamed livestock from update 3 also provide a renewable source of light hide without active hunting. For sustained crafting volumes, though, hunting is the reliable route.

Tanned, Tempered & Ready to Tackle Orbis

Hytale leather is never glamorous. It doesn’t glow, it doesn’t have a zone-specific lore entry, and the tanning rack is probably the least dramatic crafting station you’ll build. But every piece of iron armor you’ve worn, every thorium sword that got you through a dungeon, every cobalt set keeping you alive in Zone 3: all of it started with a Hytale hide and a rack. Master the supply chain early, upgrade before you start Hytale heavy hide farming, and you’ll never find yourself stalled at a recipe screen waiting for a material you should already have.
When Hytale storm leather finally lands in survival mode, the players who have been running tight leather operations all along will hit mithril gear long before anyone else. The tannery doesn’t sleep on your GPORTAL Hytale server, and neither should you.
