Here’s where to find the Valheim Grappling Hook

You don’t have to travel all the way to the Deep North biome to get the Grappling Hook. It was introduced with Valheim 1.0 and is especially useful in the new biome. You can already find the materials you need in the Mistlands.

First, you’ll need a simple hook, which you’ll later use to craft the Grappling Hook. To get one, you’ll need to head to the Infested Mines—which are inhabited by insect-like enemies and located in the Mistlands. Look for the Dvergr treasure chests there; some are found in hidden rooms behind stone doors marked with glowing blue symbols. Once you have a hook, the recipe for the Grappling Hook will unlock.

Note: You can find hooks not only in the Infested Mines. They can also be found in Dvergr treasure chests in certain ruined watchtowers in the Mistlands.

Materials you’ll need for the Grappling Hook

In addition to the hook, you’ll still need a few materials from the Mistlands:

• 10x Yggdrasil Wood: obtained from Yggdrasil shoots in the Mistlands
• 10x Refined Eitr: crafted from sap and soft tissue in the Eitr Refinery
• 4x Mandibles: dropped by Seeker Soldiers in the Mistlands

Once you have all the materials, you can craft the Grappling Hook at a Black Forge. Is your inventory filling up faster than expected again? Then unlock extra slots for your Valheim inventory right now by heading over to the merchant Haldor.

How to use the Grappling Hook

You finally have your Grappling Hook and no longer have to laboriously climb every rock face. You can hook onto suitable walls, rocks, and other surfaces and then pull yourself up.

On PC, first charge the Grappling Hook with the left mouse button, aim, and fire it. Then, press the spacebar to pull yourself up along the rope, and right-click to release the hook.

Important: The Grappling Hook doesn’t work the way you might be used to from Spider-Man. You can’t swing around like Tarzan with it. It has a short charge time before it can be fired, and that can cost you your life if you’re in mid-fall.

Do I need the Grappling Hook in the Deep North?

Oh yes, the Grappling Hook is especially handy in the Deep North. There, you’ll encounter high rock walls, deep chasms, and dungeons where you’ll have to do a fair amount of climbing.

The Grappling Hook also comes in handy at Mörkhalla, one of the new dungeon fortresses in the Deep North. There, you’ll first use the Grappling Hook to reach the upper area. To open the locked gate inside, you’ll then need the Valheim Intricate Key.
