Valheim Intricate Key: How to open Mörkhalla
Your feet are slowly freezing from all the snow, and the first icicles are probably already forming on your eyebrows as you trudge through the Deep North. And then, suddenly, you find yourself standing in front of the massive Valheim Mörkhalla dungeon. Just walk right through the entrance? Would be way too easy.
What is Mörkhalla?
Mörkhalla is one of the new Deep North dungeons and looks like a massive stone fortress with tall towers. But you can forget about just walking right through the entrance. First, use the grappling hook to reach the upper area, then work your way down. There, a locked gate awaits you—and that’s exactly why you need the Intricate Key.
How does the Intricate Key work?
The Intricate Key opens the locked gate inside Mörkhalla. Doing so consumes the key. To fully experience the Deep North endgame, you should therefore plan on using a total of three Intricate Keys.
At the end of a Mörkhalla dungeon, you can trigger a Jotun Invasion. You’ll need to complete a total of three of these to obtain three copies of Malicious Blood, which you’ll then need for the final boss, Kall Fimbulbringer.
Finding the Intricate Key Mold
First, you’ll need the Mold: Intricate Key—the mold for your key. You’ll find it in the Winding Tunnels in the Deep North biome. These are large underground dungeons located beneath abandoned villages in the Deep North. But be careful: the tunnels are teeming with two enemies that can also drop this mold: Elaking and Eyeless One.
You should also take a close look at the destructible spawners and debris in the tunnels, as a mold can be found there as well. When crafting the Key Mold, the mold is consumed, and since you need a total of three Intricate Keys, you’ll also need three molds.
How to get Bloodgold
Now things get a little more complicated: To craft an Intricate Key, you’ll need 5x Bloodgold in addition to the mold. This is one of the new metals from the Deep North, but you can’t simply mine it with a pickaxe.
First, you’ll need Petrified Tissue. You can obtain this from giant Rotten Trolls in the Deep North. Once you’ve defeated one of these trolls, its body turns to stone. You can blast the remains with Ember Charges and then collect the Petrified Tissue. Already petrified remains of Rotten Trolls can also provide this material.
Place the Petrified Tissue in the Blast Furnace along with coal. The result is Bloodgold.
Tip: With all the new materials in the Deep North, your inventory will fill up pretty quickly. However, with Valheim 1.0, you can unlock extra inventory slots.
How to craft the Intricate Key
You have a mold and 5x Bloodgold and are wondering how you can finally get the Intricate Key?
Go to a Level 4 Black Forge. Using the Mold: Intricate Key and 5x Bloodgold, first craft a Cast: Intricate Key. This consumes the mold for the key. The Cast is the unfinished metal casting of your key. This blank must now be turned into a finished key.
Frigid Kiln, Frost Foundry, and Frostcores explained
For the final step, you’ll need two new production facilities from the Deep North: the Frigid Kiln and the Frost Foundry.
To build both, you’ll need Frostcores—new resources from the Winding Tunnels. For both facilities combined, you’ll need a total of 20 Frostcores. Here’s how it works:
The Frigid Kiln processes regular ice from the Deep North into Liquid Frost. Simply put, Liquid Frost is the coolant you need for the next facility.
The Frost Foundry is the actual foundry. There, you place your unfinished Cast: Intricate Key inside and supply the facility with Liquid Frost. Only then does the metal casting turn into the finished Intricate Key.
Here’s why you should craft three Intricate Keys right away
With your finished key, you can now return to Mörkhalla and open the locked gate. The Intricate Key is consumed in the process.
Deep within the dungeon, you’ll eventually find Malicious Ice. This is a black block of ice that you can destroy. Doing so will trigger a Jotun invasion at another location in your world.
During one of these invasions, Jotun enemies will appear around a large black ice core. The invasion won’t just go away—you’ll have to travel to the marked location and destroy the core. In return, you’ll receive Malicious Blood. This is a special endgame material. You’ll need three of them later for the final boss fight.
Ready for Mörkhalla?
Now you know how to get the Valheim Intricate Key and open the locked gates. All that’s left to do is open Mörkhalla, hope there aren’t any unpleasant surprises waiting behind the door, and continue on toward the Valheim endgame.
