Protecting villagers & causing chaos in multiplayer sounds good? Then the bell in Minecraft is exactly what you're looking for.

Minecraft Bell

When you first stumble upon a Minecraft bell in a village, you might think, “Oh, cool, a fancy noise-maker.” But hold onto your pickaxe, because this seemingly simple block is packed with purpose, charm and a dash of mystery. Whether you’re new to Minecraft or a seasoned builder, here's everything you need to know about the bell – and why it deserves a spot in your next build.

What is a Minecraft Bell?

At its core, the Minecraft bell is a utility block introduced in the 1.14 ‘Village & Pillage’ update. It naturally generates in villages, often at the very heart of the town, where villagers like to hang out and gossip about the latest creeper sightings. When rung, it produces a satisfying ding-dong sound that echoes across the blocky landscape. But this isn’t just for show – the bell plays a vital role in village life and can even help you during dangerous raids.

More Than Just a Noise – How to Use a Bell in Minecraft

Want to ring the bell like a Minecraft maestro? Here’s how:

  • Manual ringing: Just right-click the bell.
  • Arrow trick: Shoot the bell with an arrow to make it chime.
  • Redstone activation: Connect it to redstone for automated ringing with levers, buttons or note blocks.

Additionally, bells can be placed in various orientations:

  • Hanging from blocks
  • Mounted on walls
  • Standing proudly on the ground

Okay, and Why Do You Need a Minecraft Bell?

At first glance, you might think the bell is just a fun, noisy decoration – which it for sure is. It makes for a nice little detail to add to your next build. But apart from that, the bell actually has some more useful functions in the game. Here’s what you can do with it:

  • Panic button for villagers: When you ring a bell near villagers, they’ll freak out and run indoors, assuming the worst. This makes it a great tool for protecting them from raids – just ring it, and they’ll seek shelter like it’s an emergency drill. When a raid is started, a villager will also ring the bell to warn the others to retreat into their houses.
  • Highlighting raid mobs: You’re right in the middle of a raid and suddenly can’t find the last one or two mobs for the ongoing wave? Just ring the bell and it’ll highlight hostile raiders within a 48 block radius with a glow effect, similar to spectral arrows. This is super useful when you're trying to find that one annoying pillager hiding behind a house.
  • Decoration: Bells add a unique, rustic charm to builds. Hang them in temples, use them as doorbells or even create a spooky haunted house vibe.
  • Pure chaos in multiplayer: Want to be the most annoying player on your server? Spam-click a Minecraft bell near your friends' houses. They’ll love it. Trust us. If you want to take it a step further, hide a bell connected to some redstone under their base, to slowly drive them insane from the ongoing noises.
  • Ring it with redstone: Bells can be powered by redstone, making them useful for traps, alarms or just making your base sound like a medieval cathedral every time you enter.

The bell might not be the most high-tech block in Minecraft, but it’s got surprising depth and can be used in both practical and ridiculous ways.

Fun Fact:
Remember piglins, the pig-like mobs with a greed for gold? Does that ring a bell? Well, these mobs also appreciate a nice bell. As you might know, these guys get easily distracted by golden items, which the bell also counts towards. So next time you're in distress, try using a bell to distract the piglins from you, just to keep things interesting.

Can You Craft a Bell in Minecraft?

Simply speaking: no, you can’t craft a bell in Minecraft using a crafting table or any combination of materials. Unlike many other items, bells are only obtainable through exploration or trading. They have to be found in some way as there is no Minecraft bell recipe.

How to Get a Bell in Minecraft

So, you can’t craft it. Instead, you have to find this shiny item by exploring your Minecraft world. Now, you may – rightfully so – ask, where in the vast infinity of your world you have to look for this item. Don’t worry, we’re here to help and will cover every place you can come across the Minecraft bell.

  • The ‘borrow it’ method: You’ll typically find bells hanging in villages, usually near the village center. Just find a village and ‘borrow’ (read: steal) one of their bells. No crafting required, just a pickaxe and a willingness to upset some villagers.
  • The trade route: If you're feeling more ethical, you can trade for a Minecraft bell with an armorer, toolsmith or weaponsmith villager at the price of 36 emeralds. Expensive? Maybe. Worth it? Absolutely.
  • Looting ruined portal chests: If none of the two options above sounds tempting to you, there’s a third option left: You may also find a bell in the chest of a ruined portal. However, the probability is very low, 1.5% to be exact, so you may need to loot a few portal chests to find what you’re looking for.

Ringing the Closing Minecraft Bell

The Minecraft bell might not be the flashiest or most powerful block in the game, but it’s certainly one of the most entertaining. Whether you’re protecting villagers, causing chaos on a Minecraft server from GPORTAL or just adding some medieval charm to your town, this little golden wonder has more uses than meets the eye.

So next time you pass a village, don’t just ignore the bell – give it a ring, appreciate its charm and maybe, just maybe, take it home with you (villagers won’t mind… much). Now go forth and let freedom ring – literally!
