How to Build a Sugar Cane Farm (Automatic):

1. Dig a 3x1 hole and place a double chest inside. Connect it to the hopper in the third slot.
2. Place a stone block left and right above the middle of the hole and the slab upside-down above that part of the chest.
3. Go as many stone blocks as you like to the left and the right (the hopper should be seen in the adjacent line). Create an area around the hopper that is 2 blocks wide (the hopper line and another).
4. Fill the second line with sand or dirt, then fill the hopper line from both sides with water flowing towards the hopper.
5. Plant sugar cane on the sand/dirt. Leave out the block opposite the hopper.
6. Build a 1-block high wall behind it and place a piston behind every sugar cane.
7. Build another 1-block high wall of stone on the pistons. Place an observer on one side of the sugar cane line one block above the pistons (where the third sugar cane block will be).
8. Connect the observer to the pistons with redstone via the top stone line. Place a comparator on the block without sugar cane and connect the other half as well.
9. Protect your minecraft sugar cane farm with walls on both sides and add glass in the front above the stone wall to prevent drops from falling out and not falling into the water.
