Minecraft Cauldron

The Minecraft cauldron is a versatile block that can hold liquids, namely water and lava. It has a wide range of uses and functions in different editions of the game. Although it doesn’t have as many direct applications as other blocks, it plays a significant role in potion brewing, storing fluids and interacting with certain game mechanics. We’ll dive right into how to get a cauldron and answer the question ‘what can you do with a cauldron in Minecraft?’

Overview Minecraft Cauldron:

  • used to gather & store liquids
  • un-dyeing banners and leather armor
  • craft: 7x iron ingots
  • job site block for the leatherworker

How to Make a Cauldron in Minecraft

To craft a cauldron in Minecraft, players need 7x iron ingots. Arrange the iron ingots in a “U” shape within the crafting table, with three ingots along the left and right columns and one at the bottom center slot:

7x iron ingots = 1x cauldron

Once crafted, the Minecraft cauldron can be placed in the world like any other block.

How to Use a Cauldron in Minecraft

The cauldron has several key uses in both Minecraft editions. Its functionality varies slightly between the two versions. We’ll introduce you to the many useful and versatile Minecraft cauldron uses.

Water Storage

In both editions the Minecraft cauldron can be filled with water. It needs three layers in Java Edition and six layers in Bedrock Edition to be filled. The water can be added with a bucket or a water bottle (adds one layer in Java, two in Bedrock). Conversely, with their respective counterparts you can also empty the cauldron.

If an empty or partly filled cauldron is exposed to rain, it will also eventually fill up, but it might take a while.

Fun fact:

If you stand inside a cauldron filled with water, you can make use of the riptide enchantment on your trident to catapult yourself into the air. Paired with elytra, you can use this for convenient traveling.

Lava Storage

Similarly to water, you can also place a bucket of lava inside the cauldron to fill it up, providing a fire-resistant liquid container, which also works as a light source with a light level of 15, the highest in the game. If a player, mob or item falls into the lava cauldron, it is set on fire, so be careful around it!

A Minecraft Cauldron Lava Farm

Contrarily to water, lava cannot be turned into an infinite source. This makes it hard to come by, as it’s only available in greater quantities in rare lava lakes in the overworld or through a dangerous trip to the Nether

Since the introduction of dripstone in the update 1.18, you can make an infinite lava farm, utilizing the cauldron. If you place a lava source above a downward pointed dripstone and a cauldron beneath it, the cauldron will slowly fill up with lava. Once it’s filled, you can remove it with an empty bucket and voila, a new lava source without any effort. For the technically gifted, you can even fully automate this process with redstone.

Collect Powder Snow

If you place a cauldron in a snowy biome, during snowfall, the layers can be filled with powder snow. Once filled, you can click on the cauldron with a bucket to receive a powder snow bucket.

Un-Dyeing Banners

If you want to change a banner you don’t like anymore and you happen to have a Minecraft cauldron, water and some buckets near you, you have all you need. By putting a banner in a cauldron filled with water, the top layer of the pattern will be removed, but the banner will not be dyed again in the cauldron.  Every single use lowers the water level by one. The same process can be applied to leather armor.

Important:

The interaction of a Minecraft cauldron with potions and the ability to dye leather armor are Bedrock-exclusive features.

Villager Profession

An unemployed villager can claim a Minecraft cauldron as its job site block. This will turn him into a leatherworker, allowing you to trade him emeralds for leather armor and, more importantly, a saddle.

Redstone Component

If you place a redstone comparator behind a Minecraft cauldron, it will emit a signal strength based on how full the cauldron is:

0 – empty

1 – one-third

2 – two-third

3 – full

That way, you always know when you can take lava out of your Minecraft cauldron lava farm for it to be able to refill itself.

Conclusion: Minecraft Cauldron

While often overlooked, the Minecraft cauldron is a unique and multifunctional block that provides players with a variety of practical applications. Whether it’s storing potions, holding water or lava or for un-dyeing, the cauldron is a useful addition to any player’s toolkit. What are you waiting for?
