Minecraft Stick

Minecraft players tend to look at the endgame when they wonder which resources to focus on. Naturally, this leads to them ignoring basic items which are not made of diamonds, gold or iron. One of them is the humble stick, an unassuming yet essential part of any player’s inventory. As any experienced Minecraft adventurer will know, Minecraft stick crafting is the key to an entire world of inventions you can use to your advantage. Currently, this small piece of wood is an ingredient in no less than 49 recipes – and with new updates, we can expect that number to grow even more. Let’s examine this small but necessary item and what joy it can bring to you.

Overview Minecraft Stick:

  • can be crafted very early
  • craft: 2x planks or 2x bamboo
  • used in a high number of recipes
  • also obtainable through chests and mob loot

How to Get Sticks in Minecraft

Sticks are incredibly easy to obtain and there are several methods to gather them. To make it more comprehensible, we have divided the methods of how to get sticks in Minecraft into 2 sub-sections.

How to Make Sticks in Minecraft

This section will concentrate on how to craft sticks in Minecraft. Luckily for you, crafting them is incredibly easy, as they are made from any plank or from bamboo. Therefore, the Minecraft stick recipe looks like this:

2x any planks = 4x stick

2x bamboo = 1x stick

As you can imagine, both bamboo and wooden planks are very easy to come by. Any tree you find holds wood for you to process and bamboo can be farmed as it regrows infinitely. Overall, we would recommend using a bamboo stick. Minecraft is still full of trees, but they take longer to regrow. So, even if the humble stick is very important for a multitude of recipes, it can be found very early in the overworld when you start a new game.

Minecraft: How to Get a Stick (without Crafting)

While crafting sticks is possible, you can also find them in some biomes as they are. In fact, there are more options for finding Minecraft sticks than for crafting them.

Mob Loot

For people that prefer taking things from others over crafting them, there are a few options for looting a Minecraft stick from dead mobs. The first is the witch, which you can encounter in swamp huts or during a raid. The other is (or rather was) the Minecraft boat, which counts as an entity rather than an item. For some unknown reason, before Version 1.21.2, boats dropped a few planks alongside some sticks when falling from specific heights. These heights were 12, 13, 49, 51, 111, 114, 198, 202, 310 and 315 blocks. So, if you can downgrade back to a version before 1.21.2, you can use this method to find some sticks.

Breaking Tree Leaves & Dead Bushes

Since 1.14, sticks have a chance to drop when breaking the leaves of trees. This makes for a quick way to gather sticks while you’re clearing out trees to collect wood. Not only do you get the logs for other crafting purposes, but you also get a few sticks along the way. You can increase your chance of finding sticks in leaves by using the fortune enchantment

Additionally, you can find dead bushes in desert and badlands biomes, which will drop sticks when broken. Dead bushes are easy to find and can be harvested with your bare hands.

Fishing

While fishing, players can sometimes reel in sticks as junk items. Though this isn’t the most reliable way to gather sticks, it’s a bonus if you’re already fishing for other items like fish or enchanted books.

Trading with Villagers

Fletcher villagers sometimes offer sticks as a trade. This is another route to acquire them, especially in villages where wood is scarce, but you have other resources to trade. To gain a fletcher in your village, you need a fletching table, which you can craft out of flint and planks. Of course, you could simply use the planks from the fletching table recipe to craft sticks directly, but through the fletcher, you have access to infinite Minecraft sticks.

Chest Loot

In addition to crafting and gathering sticks from natural sources, you can also find sticks in various loot chests throughout Minecraft. These chests often appear in generated buildings, giving players an additional way to collect sticks without having to craft or gather them manually. Here’s a list of chests where sticks can be found:

  • bonus chest
  • village chest from fletchers, toolsmiths and cartographers
  • suspicious sand from desert wells
  • trial chamber chest

These chests offer a convenient way to gather sticks while exploring and looting different structures in the game. When it comes to the suspicious sand, you require 2 things to get some sticks out of them: A brush (which requires a stick to craft) and the Bedrock Edition. The brush is needed to brush away the sand, revealing what item lies inside. The Bedrock Edition on the other hand is needed to make stick(s) an item that can spawn inside the suspicious sand block in the first place.

Now, let’s talk about the trial chamber chest. You should keep in mind that you basically need a Minecraft stick to get it in the first place, as you will need weapons of some sort to fight through hordes of mobs that spawn within the trial chamber. As you can imagine, you have to be on a higher level to routinely survive trial chambers. However, you will see soon that sticks are basically always useful – at any point in the game.

Minecraft Stick: Recipe(s)

Once you’ve collected a decent stockpile of sticks, the next step is using them to craft a variety of essential tools, weapons and other items. Sticks are the backbone of most crafting recipes in Minecraft.

A) Crafting Tools

Sticks are a necessary ingredient in crafting almost every tool in the game. Whether you’re making a wooden pickaxe to mine stone or a diamond axe to chop wood, sticks are essential. In fact, no matter which material you use to make your tool out of (wood, stone, iron, gold, diamond or netherite), you always need sticks. Tools that require sticks include:

  • pickaxes
  • axes
  • shovels
  • hoes

Example: 2x stick + 3x respective material = 1x pickaxe

Without sticks, you can’t craft any of these items, leaving you stuck with only your hands to collect resources. Not only is mining without tools way slower, you cannot use enchantments to speed up the process or find more material. Some ingredients, like diamonds, are completely inaccessible without tools.

B) Crafting Weapons

To defend yourself against the various mobs in Minecraft, you’ll need to craft weapons – and sticks play a central role here too. Weapons you can craft using sticks include:

Example: 1x stick + 2x gold ingot = 1x gold sword

Without sticks, you’d be unable to make even the simplest of weapons, leaving you vulnerable in combat situations. And while you may survive an encounter with some skeletons or zombies, a run-in with a creeper or a warden is basically impossible to survive without a good weapon.

C) Crafting Essential Items

Sticks are used in many utility and essential items. Some of the most important things you can craft include:

Example: 1x stick + 6x  iron ingot = 16x rail

This category is the largest, but we have only shown you the most important items from the extensive list of Minecraft stick recipes. As you can already see, some of the items listed here are of crucial importance when it comes to improving your home base

D) Redstone Components

For players who love to build contraptions with redstone, sticks play a role in crafting a few key components, including:

  • levers
  • redstone torches
  • powered rails

Example: 1x stick + 1x redstone dust = 1x redstone torch

E) As Fuel for Furnaces

If you’re short on coal or other fuel sources, Minecraft sticks can be used as a fuel in furnaces. Though they don’t last long, they can still be helpful in cooking food or smelting ores in a pinch. It’s not the most efficient use of sticks, but it’s better than nothing if you need to smelt items quickly.

Conclusion: Minecraft Stick

While they may seem like a basic item, Minecraft stick crafting, meaning both the crafting of the sticks themselves as well as the crafting done with them are essential for survival in the game. Without them, you wouldn’t be able to make the tools or weapons needed to explore, mine, build or defend yourself. From obtaining them through crafting wooden planks, breaking tree leaves, or even fishing, gathering sticks is an easy task. Once you have them, the possibilities are nearly endless.
