Minecraft resource packs – Overview
- An alternative to mods
- Simple zip files to install directly into the game
- Change textures, user interfaces, sounds and text in the game
What is a resource pack in Minecraft?
A resource pack is a zip file that is integrated into Minecraft and changes individual elements in the game. Resource packs used to be called Minecraft texture packs, and some still call them that today. Through the file, changes are made in the game without changing the code, which distinguishes them from mods (modifications).
These packs mainly include textures, user interfaces, sounds, font and text changes.
Downloading and installing resource packs
First of all, you can find resource packs on provider sites like resourcepack.net. After that, proceed as follows:
- Select the pack you want and click “download”.
- Start Minecraft
- Go to the menu and select “Options”.
- Find your saved file under the resource packs path (bottom left by default)
- Copy the file to the resource pack folder… done!
World and server resource packs
Resource packs are also available for custom worlds and for servers. Learn more here
Custom world resource packs
Worlds created by players sometimes also contain resource packs. These are integrated into the world and by copying them into the “.minecraft/saves” folder, you transfer the package with them. Under “resource packs” in the “options” menu, you can find it under “world-specific resources”.
If you want to share a world with a resource pack, copy the resource pack into the world folder and name it “resources.zip”. The world folder can be easily opened via the menu item “Edit world”.
Server resource packs
Server resource packs can be preset on a multiplayer server. You can decide under “Multiplayer” and “edit” if you want to use the resource pack or not. If you don’t set anything, the pack will be installed automatically in the background after entering the server. However, the resource pack does not appear on the resource pack selection page of the Minecraft menu. It is automatically saved in the folder “.minecraft/server-resource-packs”. Only there, a corresponding resource pack can be deleted again.
More facts about Minecraft resource packs
A resource pack always needs a definition file called “pack.mcmeta”, which contains the main information of the pack. If this file is missing, the resource pack will not appear on the Minecraft menu selection page.
There are numerous resource packs to be discovered online. However, caution is advised here: Some packages can lead to crashes and error messages. These files can be removed without any problems, but with official or very well-known resource packs you are always on the safe side.
Now you know what resource packs are all about and how they help you experience Minecraft in a unique and individual way. On a Minecraft server from G-Portal you can test the best Minecraft resource packs together with your friends!
