  • customizes textures, sounds, language files and texts in the game
  • No code modification necessary

From Minecraft Texture Pack to Minecraft Resource Pack

Some time ago, Minecraft resource packs were called Minecraft texture packs. The majority of players still refer to them as texture packs. This is due to its function that changed over time. Before update 1.6 these packs only changed and customized textures in the game. After the update in 2013, their function also included changing sounds and music in the game. Hence, the name change.

Minecraft resource packs allow a player to customize individual elements in the game. Through the file, changes are made in the game without changing the code. No changes are made to the  game as such. There are no new mobs, plants, biomes or blocks. It simply changes optics and aesthetics, which distinguishes Minecraft resource packs from mods

In general, Minecraft resource packs may cause changes to:

  • textures (e.g. animations, villagers, properties)
  • sounds & music
  • language files
  • texts (e.g. fonts, End Poem, credits, splashes)

Depending on the type of Minecraft resource pack the customized game may look realistic, clean, themed or medieval. Those are just examples, since there is a wide variety of Minecraft texture packs and resource packs you can implement into the game.

Installing Minecraft Resource Packs

First, one has to understand the basics: A Minecraft resource pack is a .zip file that is integrated into Minecraft’s „resourcepacks“ folder to work. To do this you have to find the right pack. You can find resource packs on provider sites like resourcepack.net. After that, proceed as follows:

  1. Select the pack you want and click “download”.
  2. Start Minecraft
  3. Go to the menu and select “Options”.
  4. Find your saved file under the resource packs path (bottom left by default).
  5. Copy the file to the resource pack folder… done!

Types of Minecraft Resource Packs

Resource packs are both available for custom worlds and for servers. Their use isn’t limited to one player alone. It is your choice whether you want to enjoy certain looks alone or share it with other players in a group adventure.

Custom World Resource Packs

Worlds created by players may contain resource packs. These are implemented into the world by copying them into the „.minecraft/saves” folder. Open the „Options“ menu and look for “resource packs”. There you can find the Minecraft resource pack under “world-specific resources”.

You can easily share a world in which a Minecraft resource pack is implemented by following these steps:

  1. Open the menu.
  2. Open the item „Edit world“.
  3. Copy the Minecraft resource pack into the world folder & name it “resources.zip”.

Server Resource Packs

Server resource packs can be default on multiplayer servers. You have to decide if you want to use the Minecraft resource pack or not. Changing these settings is possible if you open „Multiplayer“ and select „Edit“. If you don’t set anything, the pack will be installed automatically in the background after entering the server.

Be aware! The Minecraft resource pack does not appear on the resource pack selection page of the Minecraft menu. It is automatically saved in the folder “.minecraft/server-resource-packs”. Only there, a corresponding resource pack can be deleted again.

Minecraft Resource Packs: Final Tips

Since Minecraft resource packs are an extra to the game they may be confusing to players not familiar with the hierarchy of folders and all setting options. Next to this, there are many different possible packs online but not all may be working well. Therefore, consider these following two tips to achieve the best gaming experience:

  • „pack.mcmeta”

A resource pack always needs a definition file called „pack.mcmeta“. It contains the main information of the pack. If this file is missing, the Minecraft resource pack will not appear on the Minecraft menu selection page.

  • Downloads

There are numerous Minecraft resource packs to be discovered online. However, be cautious: Some packages may cause crashes and error messages. These files can be removed without any problems. To avoid this, it’s best to choose official or very well-known resource packs.

Now you know what Minecraft resource packs are and how they help you experience the game in a unique and individual way. You can test the best Minecraft resource packs together with your friends on a Minecraft server from G-Portal!
