Hytale Zones

Orbis is not your average game world. Hytale’s planet is a sprawling, procedurally generated adventure spanning multiple distinct zones, each with its own biomes, factions, creatures, elemental affinity and level of ‘please don’t go here yet’. Whether you’re strolling through the sun-dappled forests of the emerald wilds or sweating through the volcanic hellscape of the devastated lands, every zone in Hytale feels like a world unto itself because, in many ways, it is.

Hytale Zones vs. Biomes: What’s the Difference?

Before diving in, it helps to understand how the game’s world generation is structured. A Hytale zone is a large, unique procedurally generated area within Hytale’s adventure mode on the planet Orbis. Think of it as a major region with its own identity, elemental affinity, factions, lore and difficulty tier. A Hytale biome, meanwhile, is a sub-environment within a zone. The emerald wilds, for example, contains plains, dense forests, swamps and rocky outcrops all within the same zone.

Hytale zones are connected to each other via portals and gateways, and they increase in difficulty the further you venture from the starting area. Loot, resources, enemies and environmental hazards all scale accordingly, so don’t wander into Zone 4 in starter gear and expect a relaxing afternoon.

How Many Zones Are There in Hytale?

Based on current information, Hytale has at least six zones planned, plus additional standalone areas like the deep ocean. In early access, four zones are fully accessible. Two more have been confirmed through developer tools and placeholder references, but their full content is not yet implemented.

Here’s a quick overview of all Hytale zones we know of:

Zone 1 – Emerald Wilds

Formerly known as the emerald groves, Zone 1 is where every player begins their journey on Orbis. Don’t mistake its relative safety for dullness. The emerald wilds is a richly varied starting Hytale zone packed with:

  • plains
  • dense forests
  • prairies
  • swamps
  • rocky outcrops

Its elemental affinity is earth (Gaia), reflected in its lush, life-filled environment and connection to Gaia’s temple, one of the zone’s key structures.

Underground, you’ll find standard dirt and stone cave systems, descending into lava Hytale biomes in the deepest layers. Common ores like copper and iron are easy to find in caves, while silver, gold and thorium require more dedicated exploration. The fauna ranges from peaceful deer, foxes and birds to considerably less peaceful giant spiders and brown bears.

Zone 2 – Howling Sands

Leave the greenery behind. Zone 2 swaps forest floors for:

  • sun-baked sand dunes
  • rocky plateaus
  • winding canyons
  • oases
  • savanna stretches

The howling sands carries a wind (air) elemental affinity, which fits its open, windswept landscape perfectly.

Ancient ruins are the defining structural feature here. The Hytale howling sands has a strong archaeological character, with crumbling remnants of past civilizations hiding among the dunes. The local fauna includes meerkats, flamingos, the distinctive Cactee and warrior skeletons that are considerably more aggressive than they look. Ore-wise, iron and thorium are abundant underground, while copper, silver and gold are rarer finds.

Zone 3 – Whisperfrost Frontiers

Zone 3 (formerly called borea) is the cold heart of Orbis. Snow-covered Hytale biomes stretch across:

  • forested taiga valleys
  • towering mountains
  • glaciers
  • winding rivers

Its water (ice) elemental affinity shapes everything from the environment to the enemies you’ll face. Blizzards are a real environmental hazard here, so come prepared.

The outlanders are the dominant faction, with villages on the surface and dungeon structures underground packed with skeleton enemies. Deep caves offer winding mine systems with staircases. Key ores include cobalt (common) and silver, making the whisperfrost Frontiers an important stop for mid-game gear progression. Wildlife includes wolves, polar bears, rams and woodpeckers – some friendlier than others.

Zone 4 – Devastated Lands

The devastated lands is where Hytale stops pulling its punches. This is the highest-difficulty zone currently available, and it looks the part:

  • a volcanic surface of lava flows
  • ash fields
  • scalding rock formations
  • magma
  • ruined fortresses

Its fire elemental affinity is written all over the charred landscape. Enemy bases and ancient ruins lurk among the volcanic chaos above ground.

The twist? Go underground, and everything changes. Beneath the scorched surface, humid underground jungles thrive complete with subterranean lakes and dense forest growth. You could call these areas in Hytale ‘secret biomes’. Aggressive dinosaurs and raptors inhabit these hidden jungles, making the underground just as dangerous as the surface, albeit in a completely different way. Adamantite is the common ore here, while rare mithril is obtainable from bosses and deep cave systems.

Beyond the Main Hytale Zones – The Deep Ocean

The deep ocean occupies a fascinating in-between space in Hytale’s zone structure. Developers themselves have described it as ‘a zone all by itself’, even though it isn’t formally listed as a numbered Hytale zone. It separates the infinite lands from Orbis’s main continent, functioning as both a natural barrier and an explorable environment in its own right. Tropical islands dot the ocean’s surface, hinting at content that goes well beyond simple traversal.

Whether the deep ocean eventually receives formal Hytale zone status or remains its own unique category, it’s clearly far more than just water between landmasses.

Hytale Zones Yet to Come

Two more zones have been confirmed through developer tools, though their full content isn’t yet implemented. Zone 5, placeholder-named ‘skylands’, is strongly suspected to feature floating islands and carries a lightning elemental affinity – a dramatic visual setting that fits the element perfectly. Zone 6, placeholder-named ‘poisonlands’, is confirmed to exist but almost entirely unknown, with the void element being the community’s best guess at its affiliation based on naming and elemental balance logic.

Both zones hint at a Hytale zone order that’s been carefully planned from the ground up with each zone embodying an element, a distinct visual identity and its own layer of lore and challenge.

FAQ

What are Hytale zones?

Hytale zones are large, procedurally generated areas in Hytale’s adventure mode on the planet Orbis. Each one has its own biomes, factions, creatures, elemental affinity, structures and difficulty tier.

How can you change zones in Hytale?

Players progress through zones via portals and gateways.

How many zones are there in Hytale?

At least six zones are planned. Four are fully available in early access. Two more are confirmed but not yet released.

What is the difference between a Hytale zone and a Hytale biome?

A zone is a major region of the world with its own identity, difficulty and elemental affinity. A biome is a sub-environment within a zone. For example, the emerald wilds (Zone 1) contains forests, plains, swamps and rocky outcrops as distinct biomes within the same zone.

What is the starting zone in Hytale?

Players begin in Zone 1: the emerald wilds (formerly emerald groves). It’s the most accessible zone, featuring earth/Gaia elemental affinity, Kweebec and Trork factions, and a variety of surface and underground biomes.

Do zones get harder as you progress?

Yes, Hytale zones increase progressively in difficulty the further you get from the starting area. Enemies are stronger, environmental hazards are more severe, and the rewards, including rarer ores and loot, scale to match.

What is the Hytale deep sea?

The ‘deep ocean’ is a unique area that separates the infinite lands from Orbis’s main continent. Developers have described it as ‘a zone all by itself’, though it isn’t formally numbered. It contains tropical islands and is more than just a body of water between Hytale zones.

What are Zones 5 and 6 in Hytale?

Zone 5, called ‘skylands’, is believed to feature floating islands and a lightning elemental affinity. Zone 6, called ‘poisonlands’, is confirmed to exist but largely unknown; the void element is the community’s leading theory for its affiliation. Neither is currently available in early access.

Zone Out – But Do It Responsibly

Hytale’s zone and biome system is one of its most ambitious design choices, and it shows. Six planned zones, each with a unique elemental soul, distinct biomes above and below ground, faction conflicts and scaling difficulty – it’s a world built to keep you exploring long after you think you’ve seen it all. The emerald wilds will ease you in gently. The devastated lands will not. And somewhere out there, floating islands and whatever horrors the poisonlands hold are waiting patiently for their moment. The best advice? Take it one Hytale zone at a time and always check your ore supply before you portal into the next nightmare on your own hosted GPORTAL Hytale server.
