The Minecraft shulker is one of those mobs that looks like furniture, behaves like a turret and punishes you by temporarily canceling gravity. It spawns in end cities, hides inside a purple shell and fires homing shulker bullets that deal shulker damage and hit you with a certain status effect. The reason players keep coming back since the 2016 ‘Combat Update’ anyway is simple: shulkers are the only reliable source of shulker shells, and those are what you need for the legendary shulker box.

A shulker is a box-shaped hostile mob found in end cities. It’s designed to blend into the city’s purpur-themed blocks and it fights like a stationary ambush predator:

Shulkers were added in Java Edition 1.9, during the End’s big expansion era, which is why they still feel like ‘late-game security systems’ guarding late-game loot.

If you’re returning after a long break, the big modern takeaway is that shulkers are no longer just a one-time loot piñata per end city. They can sometimes create more shulkers under specific conditions when a shulker is hit by a shulker bullet (yes, even its own), which is what made renewable shell farming a thing.

Finding Shulkers in Minecraft

Shulkers spawn as part of end city generation on the outer end islands. You’ll usually see them attached to walls inside towers and rooms, and also on end ships. They do not despawn naturally, even on peaceful, so an end city you ‘half-cleared’ can remain a floating booby-trap forever.

When it opens, you can see a small yellow head inside, and the mob’s hitbox effectively becomes taller while it’s ‘active’. Visually, that opening and closing is not just flavor, it’s also your main combat window because shulkers lose their natural armor when opened.

How Shulkers Behave – And Why They Feel Unfair Sometimes

A shulker typically stays attached to a solid face and remains stationary. When a target comes within about 16 blocks, it opens fully and fires shulker bullets that chase along the X/Y/Z axes like a tiny guided missile with commitment issues. If the bullet hits you, it deals damage and applies levitation for 10 seconds, which is where most ‘I fell off the end city’ stories are born.

Even if the bullet is scary, it’s not unstoppable. You can destroy it by hitting it, shooting it or blocking it with a shield. When it hits a block, it explodes without damaging blocks or nearby mobs, so it’s a danger to you, not your architecture.

  • bring a shield
  • blocking shulker bullets = of the cleanest counters
  • only fight during open windows > low armor and no arrow deflection
  • don’t duel on balconies > levitation is fine until gravity comes back
  • clear line-of-sight safely
  • expect teleports > it didn’t despawn, it repositioned

Breeding and Taming Shulker Mobs?

There is no traditional breeding. Also, no taming. No cute baby shulkers following you around like luggage with attachment issues. Shulkers are not breedable the way animals and other mobs are. You can’t tame them either.

The closest thing to reproduction is the duplication mechanic: a shulker can sometimes spawn a new shulker when hit by a shulker bullet, under specific conditions. That’s why people build ‘farms’ around controlled shulker-bullet interactions rather than breeding pairs.

The Shulker Box Explained

The shulker box is basically a chest you can pick up without spilling its guts everywhere. It has 27 slots (same as a chest) and keeps its inventory when broken. It even keeps a custom name if you rename it on an anvil.
Basically, yes: this shulker box is the storage upgrade that turns long mining trips into organized logistics instead of ‘inventory Tetris, but stressful’. Even though it only came with the 1.11 ‘Exploration Update’ half a year after the shulker itself, it is the main reason this mob stays relevant until this day.

You can’t craft a shulker (the mob), but you can craft the shulker box:

  • drop themselves as an item if pushed by pistons or destroyed by explosions
  • open in the direction they’re facing
  • won’t open if a solid opaque block blocks the ‘lid space’ for that orientation
  • opened, the hitbox expands and can physically push entities
  • renamed, it keeps that name (even when picked up again)
  • piglins get angry if you open or mine shulker boxes
  • can also be placed by dispensers

  • normal chest = shared world storage that drops its contents when broken
  • shulker box = portable storage that keeps its contents when broken
  • ender chest = a per-player ‘linked’ storage you can access from any ender chest anywhere
