Minecraft Hoglins

If you spend any time in the Nether, sooner or later hoglins will try to introduce their tusks to your ribcage. These blocky warthogs are one of the few breedable hostile mobs, a key Nether food source and a core part of the piglin ecosystem introduced with the Nether Update (1.16). Let’s have a look at where hoglins spawn, how they behave, how to fight them, why they turn into the delightfully cursed zoglin and more.

Hoglins – Basics & Quick Stats

Hoglins are hostile, four-legged mobs that live exclusively in the Nether. They inherit some interesting traits to observe but players should be careful. ‘Hostile’ means they will attack you for whatever reason. So, you should know your opponent:

statdata (Java Edition)
health40 HP (20 hearts)
damage3-8 (normal difficulty)
knockback resist60% (hard to push back)
spawningNether
group sizeherds of 3-4 (20% chance for babies)
behaviorhostile (passive on ‘peaceful’ difficulty)
main drops2-4x porkchops, 0-1x leather, 5x XP

Fun Fact:No one really knows why but hoglins have specific fears: they will run from warped fungus, active Nether portals and respawn anchors.

From Piglin Beast to the Minecraft Hoglin

Before hoglins charged across our screens, Mojang introduced them at MINECON Live 2019 as the ‘piglin beast’, featuring an early model and even raw beef as a test drop.

  • Sep/Oct 2019: Announced as ‘piglin beast’, then retextured and renamed to ‘hoglin’.
  • snapshot 20w06a: Added to the game with hostility, drops and breeding mechanics.
  • snapshot 20w14a: The zoglin transformation mechanic was added.
  • version 1.16: Full release. They began spawning in bastions.
  • version 1.20.2: A major combat tweak – their vertical attack reach was reduced. You can now avoid their attacks by standing on a 1.5-block high pillar (previously required 3 blocks).

Hoglins vs Piglins: Cousins, Not Twins

Hoglins and piglins often share the same biomes. However, they are different mobs that you should encounter in different ways. In fact, they aren’t even always on the same side. Piglins sometimes hunt hoglins in groups. If the hoglins are outnumbered, they flee. If the piglins are outnumbered, the piglins flee. Another time, baby piglins will sometimes ride baby hoglins, stacking up to three piglins on one hoglin.

Fun Fact:If a group of piglins successfully hunts and kills a hoglin, there is a ~10% chance they will perform a ‘victory dance’ – bobbing their heads and spreading their arms in celebration. It is one of the rare moments you see mobs emote in vanilla Minecraft.

Where Hoglins Spawn

There are two biomes in the Nether where hoglins spawn naturally:

  • crimson forest
  • bastion remnants

Most hoglins actually spawn in crimson forests. They appear in herds of 3-4 mobs, can spawn at any light level and use most solid blocks as spawn surfaces. The second location is bastion remnants (specifically the hoglin stables). Here, hoglins often spawn in pen-like structures and do not despawn, similar to the piglin brutes guarding the structure.

Note:On ‘peaceful’ difficulty, hoglins still spawn, but they are completely passive and will not attack you.

How to Kill Hoglins and Survive Them

As hostile mobs, hoglins attack players within 16 blocks. Their main attack is an upward tusk thrust that deals damage and flings you into the air. Hoglins hit hard and love knocking you into lava, so fighting them requires a plan.

  • use shields – prevents both the damage and the vertical ‘fling’ knockback
  • high ground – a simple stack of 2 blocks (or even 1.5 blocks) renders you safe
  • repellents bring warped fungus to place on the ground
  • fire they aren’t fire immune; flint & steel or a lava bucket is very effective
  • tanky – they have 60% knockback resistance; you can’t easily punch them away
  • pack instinct attacking one adult triggers all nearby adults; adults are also protective if you attack a baby hoglin

What Scares Hoglins

Despite their aggression, hoglins are cowardly regarding specific blocks. They will flee if they are within 7 blocks of:

This mechanic is crucial for base building. You can create ‘safe zones’ in the crimson forest simply by placing a few warped fungi around your camp. Also, you can use this as a last-minute solution in risky fight situations since it will cause a herd of Minecraft hoglins to split.

A Minecraft Hoglin’s  Zombification

If a hoglin enters the overworld or End, it begins shaking. After 15 seconds, it transforms into a zoglin, a kind of zombie hoglin. Similar to zombified piglins, they are undead, immune to fire or lava and incredibly aggressive. They will attack almost any mob in the game (except creepers and ghasts). Also, they can’t be bred and ignore the usual repellents (warped fungus etc.).

Feeding and Breeding Hoglins

As with many mobs, if they have a certain food assigned to them that they eat, it can also be used to breed them. Although this is normally only possible with non-hostile mobs, hoglins can be bred using crimson fungus:

  1. Feed two adult hoglins crimson fungus.
  2. They enter ‘love mode’ for breeding.
  3. A baby hoglin appears.

A special ‘ability’ is that any hoglin fed crimson fungus will never despawn. You should definitely keep that in mind.

Using Hoglins: Farming for Pork & Leather

Hoglin farms are among the most efficient food sources in the game because they produce cooked porkchops if the hoglins are killed by fire or lava without needing fuel or smokers. There are many different layouts for such a farm. All of them have in common that you need a platform in a crimson forest. Make the surrounding spawn-proof with placed warped fungus, so that hoglins won’t spawn there and have to spawn on your platform. Then, add several traps that lead them to a hole. Kill them with fire and there you go collecting the drops.

Fun Fact:Iron golems attack hoglins on sight. Because hoglins often prioritize running from warped fungus or get confused by the golem’s reach, many players use iron golems as automated ‘bouncers’ in their farms to kill hoglins quickly.

FAQ

What do hoglins eat?

Crimson fungus. Feeding it to them allows for breeding and prevents them from despawning.

Can you breed hoglins in Minecraft?

Yes. They are the only breedable hostile mob. Use crimson fungus on two adults.

Do shields work on hoglins?

Yes. A shield blocks their damage and stops them from launching you into the air.

Do hoglins spawn in the overworld?

No. They only spawn in the Nether. If brought to the overworld, they turn into zoglins.

What blocks scare hoglins?

They flee from warped fungus, Nether portals, and respawn anchors.

Wrap-Up: Going Hog Wild in the Nether with Minecraft Hoglins

For a mob that looks like a walking porkchop dispenser, hoglins have a surprisingly deep moveset: they’re hostile but breedable, hate certain blocks, turn into zombie warthogs in the overworld and live in a messy love-hate relationship with piglins. If you’re ready to go ‘hog wild’ in your next Nether run on your Minecraft server from GPORTAL, try building a hoglin farm or designing a crimson-forest base wrapped in warped fungus safety rails. Just remember: in the Nether, you’re not the top of the food chain – you’re just the player holding the crimson fungus in defense.
